SERVICE LEAGUE OF GREATER LAKEWAY

HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING

The Service League of Greater Lakeway held it annual meeting and brunch on February 9 at the Lakeway Activity Center to honor the 60 volunteers who provide the many services offered by the organization.

The Service League was founded in 1988 by several forward thinking individuals who recognized the need to provide transportation and other services to residents in need. In 2008, Service League volunteers provided transportation for 124 trips to appointments. Also, Service League volunteers, Jim Burkett and Jim Hord, made 79 deliveries of 117 pieces of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and shower seats to residents with a temporary need. All of these services, along with some minor handyman work, are provided free of charge. Donations are accepted and are tax deductible.

The Service League maintains an office at Prosperity Bank that is staffed by volunteer members Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Residents requiring services offered by the Service League can call the office at 261-3514 at any time to speak with a volunteer or leave a message to be returned the next morning.

At the Annual Meeting, outgoing President, Betty Colovas, introduced Mayor Steve Swan, who thanked the volunteers for their contributions to the community. One of the founders of the Service League, Joan Buzzard, also spoke about the early days of the organization.

Officers and Board Members for 2008 were recognized for their service by President Betty Colovas. An election was held for Officers and Board Members for 2009. Jim Hord will be the President, Bill Gilbert, Vice President and Deane Willis, Secretary-Treasurer. Board members for 2009 are Bill Chandler, Loye Bray, Dottie Cucciare, Nona Kilgore, Karen Hughes, Rita Petter and Barbara Trinka.

Additional volunteers are needed to provide transportation and other services and to staff the office. Most volunteers take one 2-hour shift in the office each month. To inquire about volunteering, leave a message on the answering machine at 261-3514.
